Make Shift Project: “The Box I Came In” & “8×3 Performance Series”

makeshiftMake Shift Project presents two evenings of physical contemporary performance featuring the Calgary premiere of ‘The BOX I Came In’, a contemporary dance solo choreographed by Kenji Takagi and the 8X3 Performance Series.

“The BOX I Came In” is an artistic encounter between local dance artist Pamela Tzeng and German choreographer Kenji Takagi, former member of Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal. Premiered in Germany and presented at Vancouver’s Dancing on the Edge Festival early this July, the commissioned solo work danced by Tzeng explores memory, adaptation and attempts to assimilate when thrown into a new world.

The “8X3 Performance Series” invites eight creative artists, which include emerging, professional, and youth talent, to develop a concise 3-minute performance under a set of playful and challenging parameters. Two weeks prior to the show, the invited participants were given a package, inside they found three elements that must be used in any way, shape or form for the conception of their piece. With creative freedom yet definitive elements to incorporate, the line up of artists will be pushed to stretch their imagination and think outside the box for their Make Shift performance creations.
